The Cowdrey ShieldTournament Date 1st October 2007
Report by Derek Field.
What more could you ask? A beautiful sunny day, a temperature around 20 degrees, a picturesque golf course, green and immaculately maintained and a group of English blind golfing friends to take part in, this, the last of the main tournaments of the year, “The Cowdrey Shield”. This was more like the usual situation for this particular tournament, although, those that took part last year will remember the violent thunder storm which caused a little chaos near the end of the day.
We had a little reduction in numbers this year and although several helpers, to do the cards, act as starters and referees, were unable to attend for genuine reasons of ill health, the day went like clockwork. Here I must thank all of you for the cooperation you afforded to me. Some top quality golf was played and most of you enjoyed scores well in excess of expectations.
At the excellent dinner of ham salad with bowls of chips followed by hot, steaming treacle pudding and custard, I gave a massive vote of thanks to all the staff at Deangate, including all the professionals and their assistants, green keepers and catering staff who have made our visits so pleasant.
Following the meal the winners were announced and presented with the coveted Shields and prizes for both players and guides by the Captain, Jay Cookson. Coming in third, with a massive Stableford score of 41 and only losing second place on a count back, was Neil Baxter. Second prize went to Bryan Richards, also with 41 points. The winner this year of the mighty shield was Derrick Sheridan, both chairman of our association and note this, handicap secretary, with a colossal score of 44. He thanked the organizer for arranging the tournament and all the guides for their invaluable help.
As you may know, this may be the last year we play the Cowdrey Shield at Deangate Ridge. I hope that the move to a more centrally located golf club will save the long journeys for some of our members, and may encourage more of us to take part in future tournaments.
