2014 ENGLISH STROKEPLAY
The 2014 English Strokeplay was held at Cottingham Parks Golf Club on 29th and 30th June.
The winner was Andy Gilford with a gross 136 and was guided by wife Mel, in second place with 142 was Steve Beevers guided by John Porter.
The winner of the Bill Chamberlain Stableford with 34 points was Jim O'Brien guided by JOhn Grindall.
The Strokeplay Championship this year was played for the first time at Cottingham Park Golf Club. The course was in excellent condition and after a 9 hole practice with John Eakin I was dreading the first day and the tough opening tee shots.
On the first day we were paired with Mark Sturdy and his guide Dawn, luckily after playing 9 with John the day before it gave us an idea where we were going and we took the plan to hit irons and hybrids off all the tees, it paid off as we started with 3 straight pars but then hit a big number on the 9th after losing a ball off the tee. There were a few more big numbers on the back nine, but we managed to throw in a few good holes in between to finish with a net 66. I must give a special mention to Mark and Dawn, it was their first attempt at medal, the toughest form of golf and they managed to keep going when some people would have NR'd. The highlight of the round was losing them on the 10th. Mel was asking me what we do, to which I had no answer as I have never been abandoned in a round. Finally after about 25 minutes they reappeared by the green, to which I got asked if they were in the right place, a bit concerning when they are members. I was hoping to watch where they went as I hadn't seen the back 9 so that was out of the window. But for Mark’s first medal round they did well and finished strong. By the end of the day we had a 5 shot lead over Jay Cookson and his guide Ian, a 7 shot lead on Steve Beevers and his guide John.
Day 2 started with a fire alarm around 1.00am and like I am sure most in the hotel I was crawling round the room looking for a phone or ipod going crazy until we realised it was the fire alarm. The draw paired us with my practice partner and good friend Billy McAllister and his guide Andy. It was a repeat of the year before when we finished 2nd to Billy at Gaudet Luce Golf Club. The round started not great but we managed to get back on track after 10 then nearly lost it on the back but finished strong with 3 straight 3's through 14 -16 to end up with a nett 70. The fact day 2 was just like a friendly with mates really helped and the encouragement Billy and Andy gave me and Mel really meant a lot?
The results are as follows:-
