COWDREY SHIELD 2014
This year’s competition took place at Wharton Park Golf Club, Bewdley, on Sunday, 14 September. Twenty one EWBG members took part, including ten of the England and Wales team who were to take on Scotland in the following week.
Named after the England and Kent cricketer Colin Cowdrey this event has been held since 1987.
The general scoring this year was exceptional with six players playing to or better than their handicap. The winner was Derrick Sheridan with 42 points on this challenging golf course. Andy Gilford featured once again coming second with 40 Stableford points. A mention must be given to Peter Hodgkinson’s remarkable total of 28 points on the front nine – only to have a bad back nine of only 10.
Many players had to leave before all the field completed their rounds and it was only a small number who remained for the presentation by Tournament Organiser John Eakin.
It is perhaps worthy of mention that two players have now won this Shield on five occasions – Ron Tomlinson and Derrick Sheridan.EWBG has held events at Wharton Park for many years and the Association is very appreciative of the support given by the owners of the Golf Club.
The winner was Derrick Sheridan guided by his wife Mat and Runner Up was Andy Gilford guided by his wife Mel.
