British Blind Masters 2013
Billy & Sam Master Belton Woods
This seasons finale the British Blind Masters was held at Belton Woods Golf Club. The flagship event was played over 4 days on the championship Woodside course (par 73).
The final event of the year which would decide the outcome of the Order of Merit for 2013 was played over 4 days with 19 golfers and guides from across the UK trying to capture this coveted title.
The first day was to see 3 joint leaders posting net scores of 66 (7 under par). These included Ron Tomlinson guided by Steph, Pete Hodgkinson guided by Margaret, and Paul Appleyard guided by Neil. The weather was beautiful and the players and guides made the most of perfect playing conditions.
Day 2 started with the prospect of the round being abandoned due to thunder and lightening which had been over the course for over 8 hrs. Happily the green light was soon given by the course management and the players and guides were soon back out. There were 2 superb rounds which stood out from the rest, and they belonged to Euin Hill and his guide David, and Billy McAllister and his guide Sam, both players shooting superb 63’s. The day finished with 2 tied at the top, Paul Appleyard & Neil and Andy Gilford & Melanie. Both players had opened up a 2 shot lead over Billy McAllister and Sam & the ever steady Chris Evans and his guide Joy (Chris’s 2 sub par rounds of 68 & 70).
Day 3 was to see a change at the top again and also the round of the week. As both leaders fell away, both Billy and Chris were to burst through the pack Billy again shooting an excellent 65 and Chris 70. The round of the week though had to go to Pieta Le Roux guided by Harry whose superb 77 (4 over gross) would win him the best gross round of the week.
Day 4 would see Billy & Chris battle it out for the prestigious title, with Billy coming out on top with a victory margin of 4 shots. A special mention though has to go to the runner up Chris and Joy whose rounds of 68, 70, 70 & 67 would make them the only player and guide team who shot under par for all 4 rounds. Last years champions Scotland’s own Alan Morgan and his guide Irene put up a strong defence of the title finishing in third with an excellent final round of 67, but in the end the week belonged to Billy McAllister and his guide Sam whose superb team work won them the title by 4 with rounds of 75, 63, 65 & 68.
The Stableford Event which was run alongside the Masters was won by Nick Mills and his guide Paul. The 3 round total of 56 was good enough to see Nick win by 13 points and for the 2nd tournament running saw Nick and Paul walk away with the honours, and made all the more special for his guide Paul was seeing his late dad and former blind golfer Tom Mitchells name on the trophy - well done guys.
At the end of the event all that was left to do was to hand out the trophies and with Euin & Pieta both winning the Howie Baws gold medals for best net and gross rounds for the week. Nick picked up the Stableford trophy. Chris Evans and Joy won the runners up medals, but the star of the show if not the year was Billy and Sam securing the Masters title and also the Order of Merit for the season. Ron Tomlinson won the Seniors Order of Merit. Sam also won the Yvonne Ibbott Trophy awarded by Derek Field for the winning guide of the Masters. Billy won the Terry Wallace Trophy for the best B1 for the second year running.
